This week, I have just finished working on a site for a not-for-profit organisation, Abilities First. It is the first time that I have done any work for a charity/organisation like this and I found myself really enjoying it.

I haven’t been paid anything, I’ve been working late at night to get it finished and I’ve had to put other things off until I got it completed but I still enjoyed it.

In fact, I would encourage all small business owners to consider this type of work. Why?

For a start, doing something for the benefit of others makes you feel good. ‘I feel good already’ I hear you say. Maybe you do but making other people feel good is even better!

But apart from that, think about the possible benefits for your business.

  • You’re increasing your business’ profile in the local area. People do notice when businesses give a little back to the community. You are getting people to think of your business in a positive way.
  • It is a great opportunity to let people see how good your product/service is. You might reach potential customers who wouldn’t normally have seen your work.
  • Free publicity. Depending on the project, you might end up in the local paper or local news meaning even more people get to see your ugly mug. If you’re feeling pro-active, you could send out your own press release to capitalise on your work; papers can’t resist a good charity angle!
  • Don’t forget to mention it on your website; charity work always looks good!

Why don’t you spend some time thinking of a charity/organisation that could benefit from your expertise and give them a phonecall, I’m sure they’ll appreciate it.

You can see what Abilities First are doing here. Because of the nature of the site, accessibility was a key priority with the site build. As a result, I have decided to write an article relating to the best practices to make your website accesssible. Essential reading! I’ll keep you posted.
