Have you ever considered changing your browser? Why? I hear you cry. Let us just say that the browser that you are using to read this blog might not necessarily be the best browser for your needs.

Changing your browser may seem like an unnecessary and, dare I say it, slightly geeky thing to do but there are lots of reasons why you should consider it.

For example, what browser are you using now? I’m going to have a stab in the dark and say Internet Explorer! How did I know that? Magic!! (my apologies if you’re not using IE).

The reason for Internet Explorer being the most used browser is simple; it comes shipped with every installation of Windows. Windows is the most popular operating system therefore Internet Explorer is the most used browser. A surprising percentage of Windows users don’t realise that there are other browsers to choose from. The aim of this article is to make those users aware of the other alternatives.

Let us begin with the second most popular browser:

Firefox

The latest version, Firefox 3, has just been released (June 17) and it broke the download record. Approximately 8.3million downloads over the first 24 hours of release. All of these people can’t be wrong!! The major attraction of Firefox is the sheer amount of add-ons that are available. In fact there must be an add-on for anything you can think of, examples go here.

Opera

Opera has also just released a new version 9.5. Although not as popular as Firefox, this is a fantastic browser with a great range of tools for everyday browsing. The fastest browser out of the bunch and definitely worth a look.

Safari

This only used to be available for Mac users but a Windows version was released last year. It’s had a bit of criticism but in all honesty, for everyday browsing, it might just float your boat (especially if you’re a fan of the glossy Apple look..

Flock

Based on the same rendering engine as Firefox, this browser caters for the social networking crowd. If you’re an avid user of Facebook, Myspace or Bebo, Flock is definitely for you!.

Internet Explorer

Although still the most popular browser, it is seriously lacking in today’s modern browser functionality. The latest version, IE8, is in development and promises some good things in the future but for now I would strongly suggest looking at the alternatives.

Like everything in life, it is what you’re used to, you might really like Internet Explorer but it is always better to have something to compare it against. Be brave and try a new browser today; it just might change the way you surf!!

If you are adamant that Internet Explorer is the browser for you, please upgrade to IE7 and save your poorly web designer’s workload!
