I came across something today that I’ve never encountered before. Whilst updating one of our company sites, I added some new product shots given to us by one of our suppliers on a cd.
After building the site and regularly checking the result in Firefox/Opera, I decided to have a final check with IE 6-8. To my surprise, some of the product images were not displaying at all!
If you search the web, this is a common problem (usually incorrect file paths, uppercase/lowercase issues on a linux server etc) but I’d already checked the usual supects. I was completely baffled!
When Is A JPG Not A JPG?
As I’ve never encountered this problem before, I didn’t have a clue where to start looking. Fortunately, I stumbled across a blog post from over a year ago. Apparently jpgs can be encoded differently (RGB and CMYK). The new images provided by our supplier were encoded in CMYK.
Internet Explorer 8 and below doesn’t support CMYK encoded jpgs. Go figure ![]()
Just when you reckon you’ve got IE tied up, another gotcha awaits! I feel stupid for not knowing about this a long time ago but my excuse is I’ve never encountered it before. Just goes to show, you really do learn something every day!
For more info regarding browser/version support for CMYK jpgs, (it’s not just IE), check out the blog linked above. I hope this post saves somebody else’s sanity!!!

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Hmm that’s a new one on me – Still, we shouldn’t be surprised at the multitude of ways IE finds to ruin our days!
Thanks for bringing this to my attention good sir!
(how the devil are you, btw?)
Hey up fella! It’s been a while!
Yes, good old IE, still messing with us after all these years.
Anyway, I’m good thanks, thought I’d start blogging again; its been over two years since my last post!
What are you up to these days?
It has indeed!
Aye, And obviously being Linux users, IE testing quite often slips our mind until towards the end of the development and design process, unlike those windows sheep….
Glad to see you’re taking up blogging again – I’ve always enjoyed your posts!
The usual, sir. Although I’ve moved more towards code consultation for other devs/designers, than actual development work – I still dabble on occasion though!
